The GlobeOne app now has an SMS Scam Shield function to safeguard users from text-based phishing attempts.
Spoofing and phishing scams impersonate trusted sources, such as Globe, GCash, and banks, to deceive customers into clicking on malicious links or sharing personal information. Rogue IMSI catchers that mimic mobile towers have increased these scams in recent years.
Mr. Coco Domingo, Globe product experience VP, said:
SMS Scam Shield is our way of giving customers more control and peace of mind. With this built-in protection, users are alerted via the GlobeOne app when they receive suspicious messages that may contain dangerous links or impersonate Globe-affiliated brands.
Once activated, SMS Scam Shield scans text messages locally on the user's phone while protecting privacy and sends a push notification if a message seems suspicious. In addition, the system flags messages that contain phishing links and assists in the identification of fake sender names, such as "GLOBE," "GCASH," and "GLOBEREWARD."
Currently, over 34K GlobeOne users have enabled SMS Scam Shield as per Globe. Within weeks of its rollout, the technology had discovered over 13,000 phishing messages.
The GlobeOne app lets Globe and TM subscribers activate SMS Scam Shield for free. Once permissions are granted, the telco's mobile app immediately blocks fraudulent messages. Globe stressed that its scam shield runs on-device and simply gathers harmful links to increase the system's defenses, without reading or storing SMS messages.
Further, subscribers can report text scams at https://www.globe.com.ph/stop-spam to help the telco in wider malicious link blacklisting.
As part of Globe's effort to make Filipinos' digital lives safer, SMS Scam Shield supports the company's cybersecurity efforts and is an early step toward AI-powered threat detection and defense across its platforms.
Mr. Domingo added:
Security shouldn't be an afterthought, it should be seamless. This is just the beginning of more proactive tools we're building into our digital service.
To those Globe and TM users here who have already activated SMS Scam Shield, I would be glad to hear your feedback regarding this new GlobeOne feature
