Threads has surpassed X (formerly known as Twitter) in global daily active mobile users as per data from Similarweb. Forbes also reported that Threads’ integration with Meta’s platforms give it advantages in revenue and user base growth.
Threads recorded 128.7 million daily users on September 20, overtaking X and their 127.1 million users. In addition, it was revealed that Threads is leading in worldwide iOS usage with 62.5 million users over X’s 56.6 million.
Meta launched Threads in 2023 as a text-based app linked to Instagram. Given its inception, it was seen as a direct competitor to Twitter under Meta’s banner.
While its growth has been steady, X’s user base has been declining since Elon Musk’s acquisition of the app. In 2024, X had 150 million daily mobile users while Threads had over 81 million only.
The X still has a lead in the US market with 21.3 million daily users on mobile. As for Threads, they only had 16.2 million as of September 20 as well.
With the data made public, advertisers are taking notice. Barclays has projected that Threads could earn up to USD 2 billion in ad revenue by 2026.
The finance giant also said that the platform could even reach USD 9 billion by 2027. This follows Meta opening Threads to ads worldwide in April 2025.
X is struggling with their global ad revenue, dropping by 51.7 percent in 2023 while declining further in 2024. Notably, advertisers have returned this year despite the slow recovery period.
