Globe, AWS deepen tie-up amid push for data sovereignty and cloud investments

Globe Telecom and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have reaffirmed their joint commitment to accelerating the Philippines’ digital transformation.

Globe Telecom and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have reaffirmed their joint commitment to accelerating the Philippines’ digital transformation, as both companies addressed growing concerns over data sovereignty and the localization of cloud infrastructure in the country.

During the announcement of their multi-year collaboration, Globe executives emphasized that the telco’s modernization roadmap centers on responsible cloud adoption — working exclusively with technology partners that uphold stringent data protection standards.

“For us, the position will always be that we will work with partners who ensure utmost care of the data,” Globe CEO Carl Cruz said in response to a query from Newsbytes.PH.

“We feel we have that assurance with AWS. While there are moves to craft a data sovereignty bill, Globe will continue partnering with organizations that can guarantee data safety for our customers,” Cruz added.

The comment follows renewed interest in data sovereignty legislation, which aims to ensure that sensitive information generated by Filipinos remains within Philippine jurisdiction.

For its part, AWS said it recognizes the growing push for data localization and is taking proactive steps to prepare for new compliance requirements.

“As of today, there is no data sovereignty mandate, but we are aware of the movement toward data localization,” said Precious Lim, AWS Philippines country manager.

“AWS already has investments in infrastructure in the Philippines — such as AWS Outposts, the Manila Local Zone, and EKS Anywhere — that enable customers to run workloads within the country.”

Lim added that AWS continues to assess future infrastructure investments, guided by feedback from customers and regulatory developments.

“In the fullness of time, you will see more investments from AWS worldwide, including in the Philippines,” she said, hinting at potential data center projects under evaluation.

The Globe-AWS partnership spans a wide range of modernization initiatives across Globe’s telecommunications and digital businesses, focusing on five key areas:

Cloud Infrastructure Modernization – Strengthening network resiliency through enhanced disaster recovery and platform engineering.

  • AI-Led Customer Experience – Deploying AWS-powered voicebots and AI lifecycle management systems to improve customer service.
  • Network Innovation – Transforming network management and SIM activation systems.
  • Real-Time Operations – Using AWS data streaming for timely, personalized campaigns.
  • B2B and GOMO Digital Enhancements – Integrating advanced consent and preference management systems.
  • Cruz said the collaboration marks a major step in Globe’s evolution as a digital platform company.

“By leveraging AWS’s cloud and AI capabilities, we’re empowering Filipinos with the tools they need to thrive in a fast-changing digital world,” Cruz said.
